The difference between AHA and BHA comes down to where each acid can work. Why it earns its reputation: speed and visibility of results, backed by decades of use in cosmetic formulation. When people say an acid "transformed their texture," they usually mean glycolic.
Where it drops marks: forgiveness. That small molecule cuts both ways — glycolic is the AHA most likely to sting, flush, or irritate, and the easiest to overuse. If your skin is reactive or you're new to acids, it's the wrong starting point: not because it's bad, but because gentler on-ramps exist.
Lactic Acid — the sensible default
Lactic acid has a larger molecule than glycolic, so it works more gradually and stays closer to the surface. It also has a humectant quality — it helps skin hold water — which makes it unusually comfortable on dry skin for an exfoliant.
Why it's our default AHA recommendation: its results-to-irritation ratio is the best in the family. Most people who want brighter, smoother skin get there with lactic acid and far less drama than glycolic, and dry or mature skin often finds it actively pleasant.
Where it drops marks: raw results. Progress is slower, and at very low strengths some formulas are closer to "mildly polishing" than genuinely resurfacing. Impatience — not failure — is the main reason people abandon it.
Mandelic Acid — the sensitive-skin option
Mandelic acid has one of the largest molecules of the common AHAs, so it penetrates slowly and gently. It's also somewhat oil-soluble — unusual for an AHA — which gives it mild pore-clearing ability alongside surface work.
Why it's worth seeking out: it's the AHA most often tolerated by sensitive skin, and it's frequently suggested for deeper skin tones, where irritation-triggered dark marks are a bigger practical risk than the original concern. Gentle and consistent beats strong and sporadic.
Where it drops marks: availability and pace. It appears in fewer product lines, so you'll have less choice at the shelf, and its results are the most gradual of the three.
The BHA: Salicylic Acid, the Pore Specialist
In over-the-counter skincare, "BHA" effectively means one ingredient: salicylic acid. Its advantage is solubility. It's the most reliably oil-soluble of the common exfoliants and the one that gets deepest into the pore, dissolving into sebum rather than sitting on top of it.
Why it's the default for oily and congested skin: blackheads and clogged pores are an inside-the-pore problem, and salicylic acid is the exfoliant best suited to working there. It isn't literally alone there — mandelic acid has a little of the same ability, and salicylic derivatives such as LHA (capryloyl salicylic acid) also act within the follicle — but plain salicylic acid remains the workhorse. It also cuts through the surface oil behind midday shine, dissolving and lifting oil that's already sitting on your skin rather than changing how much your skin produces. Its soothing character makes it a mainstay in products aimed at breakout-prone skin. Typical leave-on products sit around 0.5–2%, with 2% liquid exfoliants being the classic starting point.
Where it drops marks: skin-type fit. It can be drying, especially used morning and night from the start or layered with other actives, and if you don't have congestion you don't especially need it — flaky texture is AHA territory. People with aspirin allergies are commonly advised to check with a doctor or pharmacist first, since salicylic acid is chemically related.
Glycolic Acid vs. Salicylic Acid, Head to Head
This is the matchup most shoppers are deciding between, and the honest framing is that the two aren't really competing — they solve different problems. Matching by concern is covered above; here's where they differ in ways concern-matching doesn't tell you.
- Speed and shape of results. Glycolic shows up fast — a brighter, smoother surface within the first few uses is common — then plateaus. Salicylic runs the other way: little to see for a couple of weeks, then fewer new congestion spots and blackheads that loosen gradually. Judge glycolic in two weeks, salicylic in six to eight.
- What "too much" looks like. Overdoing glycolic reads as redness, stinging, and a tight, shiny finish. Overdoing salicylic reads as flaking and dehydration, sometimes with the paradox of oilier-feeling skin as a rattled barrier compensates. Different warning signs, same fix: stop and rebuild.
- Strength and price range. Glycolic spans the widest band, from low-percentage toners to professional peels, so the label matters more. Salicylic clusters tightly, since there's little reason to exceed 2% over the counter. Neither has to be expensive; consistent use beats what you paid.
- How they fit the rest of your routine. Glycolic competes for the same nights as a retinoid and stacks badly with one early on. Salicylic slots in more easily, partly because it's widely sold in rinse-off cleansers that deliver a milder dose.

Can You Use AHA and BHA Together?
Yes — plenty of routines eventually use both, and some products combine them in one formula. But "can" and "should immediately" are different things.
The safer ways to combine them, in rough order of gentleness:
- Alternate nights. BHA on Monday, AHA on Thursday, nothing acidic in between. The most forgiving schedule, and honestly enough for most people.
- Split by zone. BHA on an oily T-zone, AHA on drier cheeks. Works well for true combination skin.
- A pre-blended AHA/BHA product. The formulator has balanced the strengths for you — usually gentler than stacking two separate full-strength products.
- Layering both the same night is for experienced, resilient skin only — and even then it usually buys extra irritation risk rather than extra benefit.

The over-exfoliation checklist: if your skin turns shiny-tight, stings when you apply plain moisturizer, or starts breaking out in new places, you've overdone it. Stop all acids, use a bland moisturizer for a week or two, and return at a lower frequency. Over-exfoliation is a very common misstep, and it often masquerades as "I need to exfoliate more."
How to Start Without Wrecking Your Barrier
- Patch-test first. Every new active, every time — here's how to patch-test properly.
- Start at one to two nights per week. Increase only after a couple of weeks of calm skin. Daily use is a destination, not a starting point — and many people never need it.
- One new active at a time. Introduce an acid and a vitamin C serum the same week and any reaction becomes impossible to diagnose.
- Buffer if needed. Moisturizer before or after your acid slows penetration and softens the experience. Not cheating; smart.
- Rinse-off formats are training wheels. A low-percentage acid cleanser is a milder dose than a leave-on serum — a reasonable first step for nervous skin, though leave-ons do more.
The non-negotiable: sunscreen. AHAs are well documented to increase sun sensitivity, and the effect can persist even on days you skip the acid. Broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, reapplied roughly every two hours during sustained sun exposure, is part of the cost of using acids. No SPF, no AHA.
And a hard boundary: acids are maintenance, not medicine. Persistent or painful acne, suspected rosacea or eczema, or any reaction that doesn't settle within a few days is dermatologist territory — no over-the-counter acid treats a skin condition.
