How an Ingredient List Actually Works

Every cosmetic sold in most major markets must carry an INCI list — International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. It follows two rules worth knowing.

Rule one: ingredients above roughly 1% concentration are listed in descending order. The first ingredient is the most abundant, the second the next, and so on. Water (aqua) leads most lists because most products are mostly water. That's not a scandal — water is the delivery vehicle — but it does mean the second, third, and fourth ingredients define the product's character.

Rule two: below roughly 1%, order becomes essentially arbitrary. Manufacturers can list sub-1% ingredients in any order they like. This is where a lot of label theater happens: a "rosehip renewal cream" may contain rosehip oil at a fraction of a percent, legally listed near the fragrance and preservatives. Nearly every moisturizing ingredient does one of three jobs. Once you can sort them, you can read a moisturizer label like a recipe.

Two practical notes. First, humectants need something to seal them in — a hyaluronic acid serum alone in dry air can feel tight because the water it grabs evaporates; layer a cream over it. Second, petrolatum has a bad reputation it hasn't earned: cosmetic-grade petrolatum is highly refined, inert, and one of the most effective occlusives available at any price.

On hyaluronic acid specifically: it's a genuinely good humectant, but it's a hydrator, not a treatment. It plumps the look of the skin surface while it's on; it doesn't change skin over time the way retinoids or acids can. Price it accordingly.

The Actives Worth Knowing

"Active" isn't a regulated cosmetic term either, but in practice it means the ingredients included to change how skin looks or behaves over time, not just how it feels today. A handful dominate the market.

Retinoids (retinol, retinal, retinyl esters)

The vitamin A family, and the best-supported cosmetic ingredient category for the look of fine lines and uneven texture. Mainstream cosmetic science is genuinely on its side — with real caveats. Retinoids commonly cause dryness, flaking, and irritation while skin adjusts, they increase sun sensitivity (making daily sunscreen non-negotiable), and anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy should ask a doctor before using any retinoid. Label reading: retinoids are used at fractions of a percent, so they'll sit low on the list. That's normal, not a red flag.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid and derivatives)

An antioxidant used for brightening the look of dull or uneven tone. The catch is stability: pure L-ascorbic acid is effective but degrades with light and air, which is why packaging (opaque, airless) matters as much as concentration. Derivatives like sodium ascorbyl phosphate are gentler and more stable but generally considered less potent. Both increase sun sensitivity and both are easy to overuse. Daily strong-acid use plus a retinoid plus a scrub is how skin barriers get wrecked. One chemical exfoliant, a few times a week, is plenty for most people.

Niacinamide

A form of vitamin B3 and the workhorse supporting ingredient of modern skincare: well-tolerated by most skin types, layers with almost everything, and commonly used for the look of uneven tone and an oily-skin-friendly feel. It became a marketing darling, which led to an arms race of 10%, 15%, and 20% formulas; there's no solid consensus that very high percentages outperform moderate ones, and higher concentrations irritate some people. Ceramides and Peptides
